Hola!

Next week I'll be a guest in ConComics, Guadalajara, Mexico.
I have never been on that side of the world, so I'm very excited and a bit nervous!

Yesterday I spent the whole day making a video greeting for the event.
It was kinda fun! I have not made any videos for a long time, so it's totally amateur quality! My friend helped me so it went better than expected though.
I also made a youtube account now, so, this is my first official video I have ever uploaded! :)

See my city and life here in Finland! I'm also telling about my costume plans for ConComics next week! See you THERE!!
You can also see me without a costume this time! Oh gosh.

Hello everyone! :)

It has been a long time since I've been writing something here.

It has been a really awesome experience to be here, but I'm already missing home (and COSPLAY COSPLAY COSPLAY!).

I'm also glad to announce, that I'll be at Japan Weekend Madrid in Spain from 9th - 10th February together with Calssara from Germany :iconcalssara: ! :)

So don't hesitate to talk to us, especially me! I'm not so scary as I look like. I'm just a bit tall and a male cosplayer! ;D

Exchange in Japan and a little contest for you! :)

Journal Entry: Mon Oct 22, 2012, 7:17 AM

Heya all, how are you?

I'm really sorry that I haven't updated anything here lately.
At summer I went to Japan, to be a translator and organizer in the World Cosplay Summit.
After that I went to Fukuoka, Japan to study in an university. I'm having my exchange here until January.
So, anyway. Would you like to see some photos of my boring life in Japan? It's not anything extraordinary, really.
I've been cosplaying a bit also, so maybe I could write a new blog updates about how was it to work in cosplay cafe in Tokyo, or how was it to work in an Japanese sewing machine event Osaka? :)

Now I'm a bit sick, I have a flu and fever. I have been thinkin lately, that I would like to give something to all of you my wonderful watchers.
I decided to make a little give away contest!

So I gathered up some newest Cosplay magazines and stuff. Including newest Cosmode, COSnap!, No!!, some Tiger&Bunny special trading cards, cosplay patterns and something special made by me. Plus, there is our Tiger&Bunny photoshoot in Paris included in the newest COSMODE, with 2 pages of photos. I will autograph it and send my cosplay card also to the winner! :) This is my first time trying something like this, so it's nothing expensive and special, I hope you enjoy!

Just click the link, read the instructions, and feel free to join!

Barnaby Brooks Jr. from Tiger&Bunny
Cosplayer: :iconelffi:

The awesome photographer: :iconcalssara:

This costume was made because my good friend Jacky Dosai from Japan asked me to cosplay wit him. It took us one year to confirm everything and schedule a photoshoot. Now we finally had a photoshoot in Japan Expo 2012, Paris, France!
Jacky was cosplaying as Kotetsu and I was Barnaby.

We had a BIG photoshoot in several different locations with COSMODE (Japanese cosplay magazine). We had a photograher and a director guiding us. It was totally awesome! And took the whole Sunday! :)

The photos of the magazine will be published on October. So I'm sorry, but you have to wait until that to see all of the awesome photos we took!~

I'll of course upload all the photos in here at October!

Whole costume is made by me.
I made the jacket out of fake leather.
You can see the WIP photos on my Facebook page.
If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask me!

I'll be going to WCS in two weeks.
My flight is at 26th of July.
Anyone going there?

After WCS I'm going to Tokyo for 2 weeks, and then I'm going to Fukuoka for 4 months.
I'm available for invitations for Asian conventions this year :)
I'll be in Japan until January!
I hope to visit Korea, China and Singapore at least!~
I'll be taking some of my costumes with me to Japan!
Barnaby, Kamina and Jecht at least :3

See you there!!!

Journal Entry: Sun May 27, 2012, 8:21 AM

GOOD MORNING BUCHAREST!

New day, new cosplay! :) I'll start putting my Gildarts cosplay on now! I hope everything turns out well.

I'm the guest of Cosplay Gen here. We have been doing juding and having a presentation about cosplay here.
All the people are very and the country is SUPER cheap!! Woah! I can buy everything!

We took some great photos yesterday with Calssara Cosplay.
I finally have new photos of my Jecht!
Check THIS OUT!:

I hope that my hard one year gym training shows out even a bit!
At least I'm over 5 kilos heavier now :) What do you think compared to my old, last summer, Jecht photos?

There is also some new makeup, a bit different wig styling, new tattoo template (thicker than before), revised arm piece thing and that white bandage on my hand! Just tiny updates though. Also the scars are made differently now, more wider and deeper color.

Hope you like it!

I'll write more later tonight or tomorrow!

And upload photos of GILDARTS of course! :)
We are going to have a photoshoot of it~

Gildarts Clive - Fairy Tail - WIP 1

Journal Entry: Sat May 12, 2012, 7:53 AM

Yo!

Here you go, first WIP photoset of my next cosplay, Gildarts Clive from Fairy Tail!

What we need:
*One jumbo sheet of wonderflex
*Scissors
*Brushes and Citadel paints
*Black matte spray
*Hot air blower
*Velcro
*Some glue
*Rivets
*Tongs

(Ps. click on the photos to see 'em bigger.)

First, we cut a nice piece of wonderflex and warm it up and roll it on our arm.
Then we add some velcro with glue on the edge.

WIP15

Then we make a strap out of wonderflex and attach it to the arm piece. Add one rivet to make it look cool.
I also added some extra straps on the edges of the arm piece to make it even more cooler and durable.

WIP1

Wrap wonderflex pieces on your fingers to make yourself a gauntlet. Woh, so easy!

WIP14

Take some measurements of your palm and back of the hand and cut two pieces out of wonderflex.
You can also check out where your joints are going and fold them in the other piece like I did.

WIP13

For the elbow pad, I took straps of wonderflex, warmed 'em up and stretched 'em on a ball shaped lamp cover.
Then I just cut my elbow pad out the wonderflex ball I had made.

WIP12

Last, spray everything with black matte spray.
Let it dry.

käsiWIP

Use a small brush and google "drybrushing technique".
Paint everything with different tones of silver paints.
Use some blue paint on the strap thing with the rivet.
FINISHED!

WIP2

What do you think?

Spring news and updates!

Journal Entry: Thu May 10, 2012, 1:44 AM

Hello everyone! How are you doing?

I've been kinda offline in cosplay business for a few months. Sorry for that.
I've been bying some fabrics and ordering wigs and stuff, but nothing else.

First I would like to tell you that I got this message yesterday:

"Dear Mr. Janne RUSANEN,
We are pleased to inform you that your admission to International
Division of Seinan Gakuin University has been approved for the
2012-2013 academic year."

So, I'm going to Japan in the end of July! I'll be first seeing WCS in Nagoya, after that one week in Tokyo, and then I take a 36 hour boat trip to FUKUOKA! Palm trees and beaches! WOHOO~ ^^
I'll be studying in Japan for 4 months and coming back in January 2013. How cool is that?!

My school here in Finland (Business management) has been kinda boring this spring. Only a few classes to attend and even all of those ended like 2 months ago! Silly school. So I've been mostly drinking beer and going to GYM (we have a free school gym 50 meters from my house) 3-5 times a week! I was in a kinda buffed shape already, 85 kilos! Of course I gained some fat also, so now I'm doing some diet but still going to gym to not to lose my muscles. Well, at least 10 kilos more weight than previous summer, comparing present myself to my Jecht photos here in DA and I can totally see the difference! ^_^ Yai!

I have also been invited to some conventions as a guest! Which is SO COOL! My next convention to attend is in ROMANIA, BUCHAREST!~ End of this month :)
I'll be the guest of Cosplay Gen there~ Check it out here: [link]

During this spring I was also a cosplay judge in Calendario Cosplay, Costa Rica: [link]

And a virtual guest and judge in Cosplay ComCom, Tijuana: [link]

I'll announce the other international events later when the information is public! Maybe I'll come to your country~ ^^

What else I've been doing this spring? Well, we have been doing some cooking.

bagelsit

Homemade bagels! Omnom~

gyozat

And gyouza!

grilli

First of May we had a nice grill party~ MEAT + BEER = WIN :D
Here you can see chicken and bacon.
We basically wrapped everything in bacon. Meat wrapped in bacon, chicken wrapped in bacon, mushrooms wrapped in bacon, BACON WRAPPED IN BACON!~ <3

pönttö

Then I was visiting our summe cottage, fixing the bird homes! I found this totally cool one, build in 1986! Woh, so old and fascinating piece of history *_*
I put three new homes in the trees~ New home on the right! Metal roof and everything! :D

kalle

Of course I was also taking care of my little turtle, Kalle. She is one energetic fellow~ <3

ostokset

Then we can get to COSPLAY BUSINESS! This is the stuff I ordered a few weeks ago. Guess who I'm going to cosplay? I changed my mind a bit.

576px-Gildarts_aura

Well anyway, GILDARTS CLIVE FROM FAIRY TAIL :) That wig I bought is a front lace wig, kinda expensive but totally worth it! Looking so natural on my head.
I'm also so tall and big nowdays that I thought Gildarts would fit me kinda nicely. I also have the same head shape. And BEARD, always growing one.
I might be getting a bit old, whahaha~

So I started two days ago, doing this kinda slowly because I still have 2 weeks time left before the convention in Romania.

käsiWIP

Made the metal arm out of wonderflex~

käsiWIP2

Painted it with Citadel miniature paints. Using a tiny hard brush and 4 different shapes of silver! COOL~
Sorry, the phone camera photo is kinda crappy, eating all the cool colors! ^^;

Anyway! I'll be posting more updates this week. WIP stuff! :) Just wait for it!
Getting active in cosplay stuff again~

Have a nice spring, all of you!

Yo! New cosplays and stuff :)

Journal Entry: Wed Mar 7, 2012, 9:59 AM

Heya all of you!

I'm sorry for not replying all of your messages yet, I'm kinda busy with school and stuff.
How are ya all? I've been hitting gym again and I've also been writing some interviews and judging stuff to conventions all around the world :)

I would like to show ya this. My next cosplay will be Barnaby Brooks Jr. from Tiger&Bunny!
I've rarely seen any male cosplayers doing this, but Barnaby is way over 180cm and I think he is kinda manly too.
All the crossplayers are making him too girly in my opinion~ xD Sorry!

So, I thought about cosplaying as him.
I have the wig and all the materials for the costume now.
Here you go, a preview test photo of wig and makeup.
Tell me what you think, please? :)

In my opinion I feel kinda fat. I dunno why! Though I'm verry skinny myself. 188cm and 78kg!
Hahahaha! Maybe just my imagination huh?

Sword and dagger of Rai - Lamento Tutorial

Journal Entry: Tue Feb 14, 2012, 2:13 PM

Swiish!

Tonight I'm going to continue my daily prop tutorials with some basic sword and dagger making.

What do we need:

-Cardboard (thick one, around 3mm-4mm)
-Carpet knife
-Black fake leather (half meter)
-Some paper balls which you get from a crafts store
-Thread
-Normal paper glue and hot glue
-One wooden stick (1cmx1cmx1m)
-Dremel or similar machine
-Cotton wool fabric
-Citadel paints, black, golden and silver.
-Small brush

And a few hours of free time!

Our mission is to make these two props, a sword and a dagger!
(right on the photo) Google Lamento - Rai if you wanna know more about the original.

rai0

We will start with drawing the patterns on a paper or straight on the cardboard sheet:

rai1

Then we can continue with cutting 'em out:

rai2

And after that comes a tricky part:

rai4

We have to cut all the edges oblique, so when we glue them together it will look like a sharp sword edge. Got it? And also, we have to make one line in the center of the sword. Cut a 5mm wide straight line in both of the pieces. Carve it out in triangle shape, V-shaped. That photo will help a lot. It's a bit hard to explain.

rai5

After that, glue the stick in the middle (hot glue).
And also glue both parts of the sword together.

rai7

Then! We take out our fake leather and cut it half. Paper glue mixed with 20% of water.
Brush glue everywhere and attach the fake leathers in the sword. Let it dry overnight.

Shoud look like this:

rai8

Next day we cut out the left-overs:

rai10

Cool black sword, eh? :D

Now, the next part requires some balls... White balls:

rai9

I dunno what these are called. Made some funny things out of 'em when I was younger.
Anyway the point is to cut few of them in half and construct the base shape of a handle.
Use glue and stuff to attach.

rai11

Then we stretch some fake leather on it. Put glue everywhere on your balls and strech the leather.
Use thread to make it stay put.

Then:

rai12

Some cotton wool fabric. To make the handle feel nice in your palm. Soft and nice... :D

Use hot glue and attach nice amount of fake leather of different shapes in the handle:

rai13

Sword guard is an easy one. Just cut out a good guard shape and glue it to the sword. Cover with fake leather. Also, use your dremel and shape those small pointy objects out of the wooden stick for the guard part.

Next thing is to use these same methods and make a dagger! :

rai15

Then, paint the sword. I used miniature paints by Citadel.
Small brush and three different paints: Gold, black and silver.

rai14

Paint the dagger also:

rai16

Look pretty and gay in your tight leather pants:

rai18

rai17

READY!

Thanks! :D Btw, any questions?
Just ask me! ^^ And don't take prop making too seriously. <3

Full Hollow (Vasto Lorde) Ichigo helmet tutorial!

Journal Entry: Mon Feb 13, 2012, 11:46 AM

Yai!

Good evening again.

Tonight I'm going to show you how I made my Full Hollow (Vasto Lorde) Ichigo's helmet (from Bleach).
Hopefully you will get some hints or tips.
This is not the only way to make a helmet/mask. I'm just going to show you how I figured everything out.
This was also my first time ever making something like this, so it's now perfect or anything!
Thanks for reading and let's get started! ^^

maski0

This is how the whole thing SHOULD look like. A mask and utterly ripped character with cool muscles (prolly have to hit the gym still at least 5 years to even achieve something like that).

Well, so what do we need?

-Plaster of Paris (bandage type, whole box costs around 20 dollars)
-Fingers (your own)
-A mirror
-Some modeling clay mass, I used the first one I found. Brown modeling mass which does not need any heating. (10 dollars a package)
-Black and white spray paint (any type is okay I think, I prefer matte)
-A fork
-Sanding paper
-White miniature paint
-Small brush
-Rubber band
-Hot glue gun and some hot glue
-Finnfoam or foam spray and a small piece of fake leather (60cm x 60cm)
-Water/paper glue

Pop-Bandage-Plaster-of-Paris-Bandage-KWPB03-

This is how the plaster of Paris looks like.

So, first we need to wrap some cling film on our head, again! Because the plaster of Paris is extremely sticky stuff. You won't get it off your hair (if you have any hair...)
Cut those plaster wraps in nice 20-30cm long pieces and dip 'em in water. Quickly put 'em in your head. Two layers everywhere.
Let it dry for a few minutes and take the whole thing of. Check where your mouth and jaw line goes and draw some random lines scetching your face! Check where your jaw goes and cut the jaw piece off too. Also make some calculations and cut the whole shape of the helmet according to your own head size shape (ears and so on).
You will look like this, maybe...

maski1

Well as you can see, the lines are not even. SO!
To make the whole mask symmetrical we need to draw some grids on it.
Whole thing will look like this:

maski2

maski3

Okay! After that we will take out the modeling clay thing.
Put it around everywhere on the surface of the mask. Maybe a nice layer of 3-10mm.
Also add some additional layers on the eyes, nose, teeth and jaw.

maski4

Yai! NEXT! Take the fork and shape out the teeth lines!
Actually now you should be looking totally cool.
Like this!

maski6

THE THING FROM FANTASTIC FOUR! AWESOME!!!!!!! >:D

But if you still wanna continue and cosplay Ichigo instead of The Thing... :(
You have to go on!

maski7

You have to sand the surface of the mask.

maski8

And then spray it black.
After that, the horns. I just used a piece of finnfoam (same as foam spray) and cut the shapes of the horns out of it.
After that I used some water/paper glue and covered 'em with fake leather. Then I sprayed 'em white and used hot glue to attach them to the helmet.
EASY?! :D

THEN, paint all white parts WHITE with WHITE miniature paint (using the small brush of course).
Now we should have almost everything ready. The last part is attaching the jaw and main mask together.
Use the rubber band and hot glue and attach 'em. AND YOU ARE READY! WOHOO! CONGRATULATIONS!

Sunday Special ;D WIG HEAD TUTORIAL!

Journal Entry: Sun Feb 12, 2012, 11:58 AM

Yo!

Okay. It's Sunday. But I've promised to provide you with some new tutorial today also! *grin*

SO! HOW 'BOUT A WIG HEAD TUTORIAL ;D ESPECIALLY FOR YOU MY BIG HEADED FRIENDS!

Actually... I just hate all the wig heads for sale. My head size is 62cm. So you can believe how well those 55cm wig heads fit me.
I even have some problems with all the wigs! I always have to cut off all the adjustable size wraps! ;__; And even then they are too small for me!
Well, my solution for the problem is this!

With only 10 euros! Yeah, around 15 dollars you can make your OWN wig head.
Which is exactly the same shape as your own head.

So you can actually style your wig only with this! No need to put it on and cut trough a mirror anymore! ^^
WAA!~

We all have a different face. Eyes, nose, lips. They are all in different places!
That's why I really recommend to make your own wig head. To get the best results in wig styling!~

Here ya go!

First! You need a packet of straws, a packet of cling film and one whole packet of plaster of Paris (wrap type) (one whole packet is 5 x 7-10cm x2m or something = around two wig heads)

wigtuto1

Staws in your mouth, wrap a few meter of cling film around your head! And then you need a friend...
Let your friend wrap all the wet plaster of Paris's wraps around your head. Around two layers everywhere.
Press it with your fingers to achieve the exact shape of your own head.

You won't be seeing anything, so your friend have to do most of the job. Don't panic! You can breath trough the straws ;D (Maybe, if your friend wont' stuck 'em with chewing gum or something..)

Okay! After that! You will look like this! Wandering around the house!

wigtuto2

Friend laughing at you. Taking some photos. Yeah, nice. Well, let's continue! Don't fall down and hit your head though.

Last thing in this very beginner's tutorial is, that you have to let your friend cut a small line (maybe 5-15cm) in the back of your neck.
That's how you can take the mask of. After you have managed to take it off, put some extra wraps of plaster of Paris on it, to fix it.
Then just let it dry over the night!

wigtuto3

Yai!

AND THAT'S IT ! :D

A 100% ACCURATE WIG HEAD FOR YOU! :)
You can put some layer of paint or something on it if you want!
Totally worth the time!

Total time: 30-60min (+ drying one night)
Total cost = 10 euros (15 dollars)

WOOOHHOOH!

Thanks! Any questions? Just hit me with 'em!

Vash the Stampede -Trigun - Angel Arm WIP/Tutorial

Journal Entry: Sat Feb 11, 2012, 8:07 AM

Yohoo~

How are you all? :)

I've been mostly cooking today!
I woke up and made some coffee. And also took out this juicy roast beef out of the fridge.
I rubbed some pepper and salt on it and then I grilled it a bit on a cast iron pan, with butter and olive oil.
Then I put it in the oven (around 125 celcius) and waited for one hour. When temperature indicator (which I had nailed on the beef) was pointing 55 celcius I took it out.
And I grabbed the whole thing in foil and linen cloth and waited for 30min-60min. READY! ^^

I also bought some sake with it!

While I was cooking I took a photo for ya:

Omnomnom! SO TASTY! *__* <3

Well okay, continuing with the daily tutorial/WIP photo set.
Here you have something extra special stuff.
How to make a fucking huge 4 meter long prop with LIGHTS on it.
And the weight is only under 4kg's so you can wave it with one hand! Yai! xD

Vash the Stampede and his Angel Arm!

I have to say, that making this arm. Well, I was a bit drunk (all the time).
I made the whole thing in two days. Yeah, two days... So I might make something a bit more closely if I would make it again!
But I was in a hurry, so here ya go. Hope you can get some tips or hints on your future cosplays and stuff like that!
Don't follow my instructions completely, this is just a one way to do it. You can always imagine and figure out your own methods!

Ragna The Bloodedge - Blazblue -Sword WIP/Tutorial

Journal Entry: Fri Feb 10, 2012, 7:31 AM

Ohhh hayy!

Oh gosh, today has been so amazing!
At the morning I got some amazing news concerning Mexico and New York! All some cosplay related stuff which I will tell you later :) Waaaaaaaaaa~
But I'm super happy about everything!

AND THEN!

I got an email which said that...

I'VE BEEN ACCEPTED TO EXCHANGE IN FUKUOKA,JAPAN NEXT AUTUMN! ^__^ o/ WOHOO!
So I'll be living in Japan for the rest of the year, starting in autumn! Let's see there!

I've been really waiting for the exchange results for the past two weeks!
Japan is the place where I really WANT to go. And I've never been in Fukuoka! I need to polish my Japanese language skills!~
I hope I can take some courses in Japanese also. And I'll also take some cosplays with me ;D

I also ordered some new wigs and fabrics for my future cosplays. Including Gray Fullbuster from Fairy Tail and Barnaby Brooks Jr. from Tiger&Bunny!!!

Well, as Gray Fullbuster is a really simple cosplay... I've been thinking about making a huge ice weapon for him! Ice lance or Bazooka. I also wanna try some new materials, because I'm going to make the whole weapon transparent and icy looking. Really waiting for that challenge! You guys got any tips for that?

But yeah, let's get to the business.
Today I'm going to show you how I made the huge sword/gun prop of Ragna the Bloodedge.

Here you go, a full WIP/tutorial photo gallery with some instructions:

And I would really like to highight that this is only one method to do things. There are thousands of methods of how to make props and cosplays and I totally understand that.
Some people were complaining about "I don't understand what's the idea of posting those tutorials when there is other ways, maybe even simple ways to do things? *insert random rant here*".

Well, I just wanted to share information of my methods. You can adapt some of them if you want, but if you think that all of them are unnecessary I totally understand it, you don't need to watch them then.

I just thought about sharing my methods and photos so someone could get some tips, help or hints on their future cosplays. I'm sorry if someone got a pea in their nose because of me.
